  • Open Source training:

Comm-Tech now offers training in the use of Open Source Software (OSS).

Software licensing is an extremely important issue facing organisations and small businesses. Many new and used computers in this country run under a version of Windows with applications such as MS office, Photoshop, Pagemaker, Quark etc. Licensing for this software is costly and locks organisations into expensive upgrade paths.

Open Source Software such as Linux or Open Office, does not belong to any single person or company and can be freely distributed and downloaded, (as opposed to licensed from companies). OSS can be used on a variety of Operating Systems, not only Linux or Windows.

Linux and OSS are ideal for anyone who wants to keep their software costs low, or is reluctant to pay for software licences from large corporations. For example; Open Office costs UKP0, whilst Microsoft Office XP costs UKP206.48. Photoshop CS is UKP605.13, while Gimp2 costs UKP0. Open Source is therefore especially suited to artists, designers, small businesses, community groups and charities.

Workshops run on Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 6:30. All participants will be given a copy of the software they have learned.

For further information or to register, contact Naomi or Alan on 0207 274 7133 or email ostraining (at) comm-tech.org.
